A man threw used nappies, fell through a roof and locked his half-dressed ex-partner out of her house, a court heard.

Nathan Edgington “kicked off” and slapped his victim on the leg and grabbed her wrists during an argument on May 16 last year.

Welshpool Magistrates’ Court heard that the “strange and irrational” 30-year-old was seen pulling rubbish out of a bin, including used nappy bags, and threw them at the Welshpool house, driveway and his victim.

Edgington was convicted following a trial after pleading not guilty to assault by beating however he did admit causing criminal damage.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, told the court that the Birmingham man climbed onto a roof but fell through plastic corrugated sheets and winded himself.

“The victim checked on him and he told her that she ‘best open this door now’. The victim opened the door slightly, and he pushed her out of the way.

“The defendant grabbed her wrists and left her outside half dressed. He walked out with the keys and locked the house. She struggled to get keys from him. The defendant made loud intimidating noises and raised his hand and she thought he was going to harm her but didn’t strike her. The defendant then unlocked the door and left.”

A witness said the victim looked “terrified”.

Police arrived but could not locate him until four days later when he was arrested at the police station after handing himself in.

In a victim impact statement read in court, the victim said Edgington is “significantly different” when he is drunk.

“This is not normal behaviour. I’ve tried so many times to give him the benefit of the doubt. I feel very frightened of him.”

Martin Walker, defending, said the relationship between the pair ended that day, and he has since moved back to Birmingham.

“He said it wasn’t the best idea to walk over the corrugated sheets.”

Magistrates handed Edgington, of Leasow Drive, Birmingham, a 12-month community order with 20 rehabilitation days including alcohol monitoring, and a two-year restraining order.

He must also pay £69.09 in compensation for the damage caused to the roof, £620 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
